I bought this not for sports purposes, but to put on my chair to allow me to sit higher. Better than a cushion. But because my pets also like sitting on it, I bought another one recently. It does not have any weird smell.

Currently using it for floor exercises such as scapular and wrist strengthening. Then as a indoor cushion or outdoor sitting pad when not used in its primary role.

Why use a pad
The extra comfort this pad gives you is not to be sniffed at. It also creates a slightly unstable base (but not too unstable) so you can work your deep muscles that little bit harder. Lastly, it improves your positioning. For example, if you place the pad under your bum when seated, it'll help you align your back and get it more vertical.
